Re: Clock DVA…surely samples/samplers and not synths, right?

I'd forgotten about CLock DVA. Had a play of a few tunes and thought it sounded very familiar, especially 4 Hours and a couple of others. Reading up about them I hadn't realised they were from Sheffield, which clicked a light bulb. I saw them in Sheffield when I was at uni there early 80s, but TBH I can't remember any of the details whatsoever, especially not their live setup. I was probably off my conker at the time, which was probably the best way to be at a gig like that, I mean they're not exactly full of joy are they?

A quick listen on YT and it sounded mostly guitar based - that stylised 80s overdriven bass and jangly guitars, though there were a few loops thrown in - very static, so I'd imagine tape loops. Akai samplers weren't out till later, so I very much doubt they used samples. At that time the only sampling was on exquisitely expensive studio gear, definitely no consumer options. I dunno about later DVA stuff, I'm only talking of early 80s with the original line-up. I do remember that I only ever saw them once, obviously didn't like them enough to go again. If they went into the EBM stuff, it's likely they did use samplers later on, though a lot of EBM was heavily quantised, so rigid-sounding songs are often down to just strict 16th 4/4 rigidity, not necessarily sampling.

Quite enjoyed listening to 4 Hours though, I'd forgotten how much weird stuff I used to listen to and go to gigs for.
