SM7B vs. Aston Origin: Which Is Better for My Vocal Recordings?

Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right subforum for this kind of question—if not, please let me know.

I’m currently working on recording and producing a few of my own songs. My goal is to let my creativity flow and enjoy a bit more freedom than I usually have when collaborating with others.

Evaluating own recordings can be tricky, and I feel I might have a blind spot here, so I’d love to hear a second opinion.

The recordings are completely raw, and I’m mainly looking for feedback on which mic you think provides a better starting point or raw material. This isn’t about the performance—the songs still need some practice.

I’ve tested two mics:
• Shure SM7B (set flat)
• Aston Origin (no highpass)

Attached, you’ll find a short clip for each mic, featuring a snippet of a verse and a chorus.
Both were recorded using a pop filter and through a Golden Age Premier Pre 73, with the high-pass filter set to 80 Hz, air band at 0dB, and gain adjusted to match the mic’s output.

I’m personally leaning toward the SM7B, but I might be missing something, so I’d really appreciate your input!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Best regards,
Andy
